The American Corner in Nicosia, hosted by Near East University, was launched in 2007 with a donation of $25,000 in equipment and materials from the People of the United States. It is one of hundreds of American Corners around the world that serve as regional resource centers for information and programs highlighting American culture, history, current events, and government. The Corners also provide access to American-themed books, videos, DVDs, and CD-ROMs, in addition to free internet access and educational materials.
Over 30 students from Near East University
came to the Corner and spoke with U.S. Embassy representatives
and Cyprus Fulbright Commission Counselor Gulsen Oztoprak
about U.S. Education and other programs. The students shared
their thoughts and program ideas with U.S. Embassy and Fulbright
representatives, proposing ways for the Corner to reach
the community more effectively, in order to better serve
the needs of visitors to the Corner. Students’ ideas included
scholarship presentations, book club events, poetry reading,
and English language seminars on course subjects. More than
20 students volunteered to help with Corner programs and
outreach. |
