U.S. Ambassador Frank C. Urbancic, Jr. sat down to talk with nine Greek-American honors students on a foreign-policy study trip sponsored by the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) about the Cyprus problem and other issues. The students were accompanied by AHI Executive Director Nick Larigakis. The students, who were selected from universities all over the United States, were extremely engaged and expressed a deep commitment to the effort to reunify Cyprus.
Following a brief overview of the current situation in Cyprus by the Ambassador, the students and Mr. Larigakis asked the Ambassador, Political Officer John Rhatigan, and Assistant Public Affairs Officer Jason Chue a variety of questions on U.S. policy on Cyprus, the activities of the Embassy, and life in the Foreign Service. The students learned not only about the Cyprus problem, but the variety of foreign-policy issues concerning the U.S., both in Cyprus and the region.
This was one of a series of Embassy “Open House” programs for students visiting Cyprus from the U.S. Through these outreach programs, many students are inspired to pursue careers in public service and diplomacy.
