Welcomed by Chris Phylactou, President of the Board of Directors, and Philippos Patsalis, Medical Director, U.S. Ambassador Frank C. Urbancic visited the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics in Nicosia on March 24. The Ambassador and the two U.S. representatives on the Institute’s Board of Directors—Dr. Lucy Malisan-Papaleontiou and Dr. John Kaimakliotis—toured the facility, met with staff and visited the laboratories and clinics.
The Institute was established with funding provided by the United States through the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the 1990s. Since then, the Institute’s work in neurology, molecular biology and human genetics has earned it international recognition. The Ambassador was pleased to note that, in addition to providing critical scientific and medical services to the people of Cyprus, the Institute maintains a growing network of contacts and affiliations with American organizations and researchers.
