U.S. Ambassador Frank C. Urbancic made an official call on March 16, 2009 to Larnaca, the historic port city and commercial center that is also home to Cyprus’ main airport. The Ambassador visited historical sites such as the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, a holy Islamic site that was restored in part with $3 million in USAID funds, and the Church of Saint Lazarus, which is renowned for its ornate iconostasis and underground tombs. Afterwards, the Ambassador was treated to a personal tour of the Pierides Museum, home to a collection of archaeological treasures spanning 9,000 years of the island’s history.

One of the main highlights of the visit was a reception for local leaders aboard the USS Halyburton, a U.S. navy vessel named in honor of William David Halyburton, Jr., a young sailor who lost his life during the Battle of Okinawa. The ship’s commander, Michael P. Huck, and Ambassador Urbancic welcomed several high-level guests, including Bishop of Kition Chrysostomos and Mayor Andreas Moyseos. Guests mingled and shared the sunny day with some USS Halyburton sailors, who not only enjoyed some rest and relaxation in Cyprus, but took some time to help paint the Agios Spyridon school for special-needs children. |
