During May 2 and 16, 2009, over 40 Greek and Turkish Cypriot youth ages 12 -15 came together in Agros and Kyrenia to participate in a bicommunal basketball twinning project. Organized by PeacePlayers International—Cyprus and funded by the Embassy’s Bicommunal Support Program, the program focused on using the game of basketball and the values of sportsmanship to bring the youth together, break down stereotypes and misconceptions and foster an environment whereby children who play together can learn to live together.

The youth engaged in life skills activities and were given the chance to get to know each other before transitioning to the basketball court. The mixed teams of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot youth displayed teamwork, passion and basketball skills, as well as tolerance, mutual understanding and respect.
