Thanks to the hard work of the “Clean Energy Group”, the electronics workshop of a Nicosia vocational high school is now powered by clean, efficient and consistent energy generated by solar and wind power. The “Clean Energy Group”—a group of energetic vocational high school students—proudly explained the results of their work during a presentation on Thursday, May 8, 2008. With financial support from a grant from the USAID funded Supporting Activities that Value the Environment (SAVE) project, the “Clean Energy Group” worked with their teachers to apply what they had been learning in the classroom—namely, how to use new, environmentally friendly technologies for electricity generation. Their presentation highlighted the Group’s accomplishments, which included revamping their workshop, planning and implementing a project, and building an effective team.
SAVE small grants support activities that protect and promote the island’s natural and cultural heritage resources. Like all U.S.-funded programs in Cyprus, SAVE is aimed at facilitating reunification of the island, including through encouraging sound environmental management and local initiative.
