In honor of the memory and legacy of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered by violent extremists in Karachi, Pakistan in 2002, Embassy Nicosia commemorated the 8th annual World Music Days at Ambassador Urbancic’s residence by sponsoring the Chris Byars and Ari Roland Quintet from New York City and the bicommunal Jazz Futures Group from Cyprus. Deputy Chief of Mission Jonathan Cohen paid tribute to Daniel Pearl and read President Obama’s remarks in front of an audience of over 100 people.

Using the universal language of music to celebrate our common ground, the Jazz Futures program, since its inception in June 2008, has been bringing together musicians from both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities with a view to establishing sustainable and meaningful intercultural cooperation and to inspiring hope for the divided island of Cyprus.
