The U.S. Embassy hosted Cyprus Fulbright Commission Counselor Gulsen Oztoprak, who spoke with students at Turk Maarif Koleji (TMK) in Famagusta about scholarship opportunities to study in the United States. Ms. Oztoprak explained how to apply for scholarships, including the CASP scholarship program administered by the Fulbright Commission, and debunked several prevailing myths about study in the United States – that it is too difficult, too expensive, or limited only to privileged groups. She highlighted the benefits of a broad liberal-arts education and talked about the varieties of scholarships available, including academic and athletic scholarships, and partial scholarships.

Assistant Public Affairs Officer Jason Chue shared his own experiences attending college on a scholarship, and highlighted the diverse student body found today at universities across the United States.

The TMK students all participate in the Embassy’s English Access Microscholarship program, which started in February 2008 and now reaches over 150 students between the ages of 14 and 16. In addition to their English-language instruction, the students learn about American culture through guest speakers and cultural outings.
