The great variety and high quality of U.S. universities was showcased by Cyprus Fulbright Commission Counselor Gulsen Oztoprak during visits to secondary schools and universities in Nicosia and Famagusta in March 2009. Over the week, Ms. Oztoprak spoke with nearly 100 students about the structure of the U.S. education system, including graduate and undergraduate programs, as well as admissions requirements, financial aid, scholarship opportunities, and student life in the United States.
Ms. Oztoprak shared her own experiences of studying and living in the U.S. and highlighted the advantages of U.S. educational institutions, including the excellence of U.S. facilities, resources, and faculty. During her presentation at the American Corner at Near East University, Ms. Oztoprak used Embassy-purchased reference materials in the collection to demonstrate the vast choice of institutions and programs to the audience. Students seized the chance to ask Ms. Oztoprak about opportunities to study subjects such as law and literature in the U.S.
The students at Near East High School also listened to presentations by Ms. Emine Insay and Mr. Omer Ozkan, two Turkish-Cypriot education professionals who toured universities in the Chicago area last summer on an Embassy-sponsored orientation program. They shared photos of their visit to Chicago and enthusiastically conveyed how U.S. institutions of higher education offer unique opportunities, both on and off campus, that are available nowhere else in the world. |
