Mr. Costas Yennaris, discussing with journalists
at the conference |
During May 3-5, 2008, forty-five eminent journalists from both communities in Cyprus as well as from Greece and Turkey attended the third Journalist Symposium held in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss current developments in Cyprus as well as on the role of the media with respect to its power to shape public opinion. Participants also examined recent conflict in Turkey and its consequences for Cyprus and the region. Debate continued during coffee breaks and meals. Those taking part commented on the high level of dialogue, mentioning how vital it was to discuss such issues of mutual concern with colleagues from Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. The symposium closed with a visit to Turkish daily Sabah, where participants had the opportunity to visit the entire operation and discuss Turkish press issues with key members of the editorial staff. The conference generated blanket coverage in the press with more than 40 newspaper articles as well as several television programs devoted to the event. Participants represented the entire political spectrum, hailing from Islamist, left-wing, right-wind, centrist, government-supported and opposition newspapers.
