In celebration of United Nations Day (October 24th), United States Ambassador Frank C. Urbancic discussed careers in diplomacy and working at the United Nations with students at the American Academy of Nicosia and the American Academy of Larnaca on October 24 and October 29, respectively. These private schools were separately established by American missionaries in the early 1900s and are widely recognized not only for their excellent academic reputations, but for their talented faculties and international student bodies as well. In addition to Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot students, the Ambassador’s audiences included students from France, Holland, South Africa, Moldova, Syria, Britain and Russia.
Ambassador Urbancic spoke with dozens of students, including the Model UN group, about his life and background as a diplomat and about the structure and function of the UN, where he worked for several years. He described the various UN bodies, including peacekeeping forces around the world such as UNFICYP, the peacekeeping force that has been stationed in Cyprus since 1964.
In addition to careers in diplomacy and the role of the UN, the Ambassador also spoke about the unparalleled educational opportunities available at universities in the U.S. He encouraged students to seek more information about American universities and academic programs, which is available on the EducationUSA website http://www.educationusa.state.gov and through the Cyprus Fulbright Commission at http://www.fulbright.org.cy.
