Logo and Slogan Needed!
Competition for Famagusta Launched

March 2009

With support from USAID, the newly created “Famagusta Walled City Destination Development Project Steering Committee” has launched the first of several activities meant to breathe new life into old Famagusta—a logo and slogan competition.

The Walled City of Famagusta is endowed with an unparalleled wealth of cultural heritage and beauty. Centuries of history and associated traditions are waiting to be explored in this open air museum—itself a testament to Cyprus’ rich, diverse and multicultural past. Just as in antiquity and throughout the medieval period, Famagusta’s potential as a center for visitors and commerce is vast. However, unlike during those times, this potential is currently unrecognized. To remedy this and with technical assistance and support from USAID, a group of local leaders, business people and residents are working together as the “Famagusta Walled City Destination Development Project Steering Committee” to increase appreciation of the City’s unique place in history and in the region and to inspire interest in improving conditions within the City for residents and visitors alike.

To kick off their initiative, the Committee has begun a public awareness campaign and is organizing a logo and slogan competition. Anyone interested in Famagusta can submit logo and slogan designs, which will be evaluated for creativity, marketability and functionality and then displayed at a Children’s Festival planned for April 11, 2009, where people will be able to vote on them. More information on the Committee and the competition can be found at http://www.famagustawalledcity.org.

Like all U.S.-funded programs in Cyprus, activities such as these are aimed at facilitating reunification, including through the responsible management of natural and cultural resources.
