A new and improved water quality testing facility at the Kumkoy/Syrianohori water pumping station was inaugurated on Friday, September 25, 2009. Fifteen participants benefitted from a three-day training course that included how to install and use the new equipment and testing protocols that were developed and provided by the USAID-funded Supporting Activities that Value the Environment (SAVE) project. Hosted by Ms. Barbara Rossmiller, SAVE Chief of Party, Mr. Nazim Çavusoglu, Mr. Asim Kayan and Mr. Alan Davis, U.S. Agency for Internatioanl Development (USAID) Representative, spoke at the event and congratulated the participants in the Laboratory Field Sampling and Testing Training Workshop.
All of the speakers emphasized the critical importance of access to safe drinking water for everyone on the island and around the world. This new lab will enable more comprehensive field sampling, testing and analysis of a major source of public drinking water.
Sound environmental management, and especially sound water management, is vital to economic growth and productivity. Like all U.S.-funded programs in Cyprus, SAVE is aimed at facilitating reunification of the island, including through the better protection and management of the island’s critical natural resources. |
