May 13, 2008

Cypriot poets and creative writers from both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities discussed their work with five well known American poets sponsored by the Iowa Writing ProgramOn May 13 more than 20 Cypriot poets and creative writers from both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities discussed their work with five well known American poets sponsored by the Iowa Writing Program. David St. John of University of Southern California, Los Angeles; Natasha Trethewey of Emory University; Debra Marquart of Iowa State University; Christopher Merrill of University of Iowa; and Jennifer Kwon Dobbs of St. Olaf College described the Iowa Writing Program and listened to well known Cypriot artists describe the inspiration for their poetry. A common theme of all discussions was the extent to which their body of work was affected by the Cyprus problem. At the end of the session and over dinner the writers exchanged books they had written and discussed areas of further cooperation.
