WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY- MAY 3, 2008

 

Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

Secretary Rice Cites Importance of Free Press to Democracy

 

Washington -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice praised journalists for being on the front lines to report “some of the most difficult conflicts in the world.” Speaking April 10 at the State Department-sponsored Edward R. Murrow Journalism program, Rice said journalists very often have sacrificed their lives to bring the news to the general public. “And so I especially want to acknowledge that sacrifice,” said Rice, speaking at the program, which brought about 200 journalists from around the world to examine journalistic practices in the United States. Secretary Rice Says Independent Journalism Vital to Democracy

 

Washington -- Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya “stood for what is best in independent journalism, a willingness to try to get to the truth at whatever cost,” U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told the son and colleagues of the slain journalist. “The role of the independent press is extremely important in society, particularly for democratic development,” Rice said. She said a free press is a primary value in a well-functioning democratic government, adding, “People need information in order to hold their government accountable.” An independent press provides this service, she said. United States Emphasizes Importance of Protecting Press Freedom

In recognition of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, the United States is emphasizing the importance of protecting press freedom. The State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor says in a statement supplied to USINFO that “supporting press freedom is an integral part of our efforts to promote human rights and democracy worldwide.” And a new report from the Organization of American States says the right to freedom of expression has advanced in the Western Hemisphere, “especially as a result of the transitions to democracy.” But the report also adds that “the obstructions of freedom of expression seen in 2006 are genuinely a cause for concern.” (complete text)

Veteran Reporter Describes the Art of the Interview
IIP's Handbook of Independent Journalism offers advice for reporters

 

American reporter Kristin Gilger says, “Skillful interviewing is the basis for all good reporting and writing.” An interview is defined as information, opinion, or experience shared by a source in conversation with a reporter. What makes an interview a little different from an ordinary conversation is that the reporter determines the direction of the questioning. (complete text)
