PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE U.S. EMBASSY
ON DECISION TO DEMOLISH THE LEDRA STREET BRIDGE

The demolition of the footbridge is a positive and welcome move towards re-opening Ledra Street and a step in the right direction towards re-uniting Europe’s last divided capital.

Opening Ledra Street to pedestrians would embrace the spirit of the July 8 “Set of Principles” endorsed by the leaders of both communities, as well as that of UNSCR 1728.

We urge both sides to capitalize on the positive momentum generated by this gesture that would help prepare the ground for the resumption of full-fledged negotiations aimed at a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

As always, the U.S. Embassy offers its good offices to both sides and the UN in hopes of moving the process to a successful and speedy conclusion.
