U.S. Embassy Launches Film Series on Trafficking in Persons
On November 26 at 6:30 p.m., the U.S. Embassy will launch a film series spotlighting the global problem of trafficking in persons with the showing of the documentary Frontline: Sex Slaves at the American Center (33B Homer Avenue) in Nicosia. Ambassador Ronald Schlicher will introduce the documentary and, after the screening, Dr. Juliette Dickstein, the Embassy’s Bicommunal Coordinator, will lead discussion with Nicoletta Charalambidou from KISA and Mine Yucel from Prologue Consulting.
Five program evenings are scheduled as follows:
- Day One: Monday November 26, 6:30pm: Frontline: Sex Slaves.
- Day Two: Thursday November 29, 6:30pm: Lilja 4-Ever.
- Day Three: Monday December 3, 6:30pm: Inhumane Traffic; and Parallel Lives.
A representative of the MTV Exit anti-trafficking in persons campaign will introduce the films. After the screening, a discussion will follow about the anti-trafficking campaigning strategies of MTV Exit and how these same strategies might be used in Cyprus.
- Day Four: Thursday December 6, 6:30pm: Human Trafficking.
Screening will include a discussion on the role of law enforcement in combating trafficking in persons.
- Day Five: Monday December 10, 6:30pm: Women Trafficking and Frontline: Sex Slaves [Encore].
Screening will include a discussion on the role of the media in putting a spotlight on the trafficking problem.
This film series coincides with the U.S. Department of State's campaign to combat violence against women.
