Airport Arrival Statement
by Ambassador Michael Klosson
August 28, 2002
Ladies and Gentlemen:
My family and I are delighted to arrive in Cyprus for the first time.
We want to thank everyone for welcoming us this afternoon, especially the official representatives of the Republic of Cyprus here today. We have heard about the warm Mediterranean hospitality of Cyprus, and your presence is certainly a great first example.
My wife Boni, my daughter Karen, and I are looking forward to our time on this beautiful and historic island. We are eager to experience its sights, sounds and tastes, and learn more about the rich and ancient culture of Cyprus and its traditions, including the famous meze meals.
I am delighted that in less than twenty-four hours, I will have the opportunity to present my credentials to President Clerides, and take up so quickly my official duties.
I am honored to represent the President and people of the United States of America, and I feel the weight of that responsibility. This is a critical juncture for Cyprus – an opportunity of a generation for a brighter future for Cypriots from one end of the island to another. Such an opportunity must be seized with all the urgency that can be summoned.
I am eager to begin my work as part of the U.S. team supporting the UN Secretary General’s crucial mission to facilitate the direct talks now underway. In the next few days, I look forward to hearing first-hand the leaders’ views on the status of the talks.
As my preparatory consultations in Washington made clear, the US and Cyprus have many other issues to pursue together as well. These too will be part of my mission here -- strengthening our counter terrorism efforts, deepening our business ties and expanding law enforcement cooperation.
