Cypriot and American Women Artists Hold a "Wonder Women Residency Program"
June 27, 2011
With a view to promoting a dynamic network of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot women artists, and to encouraging a vital exchange between Cypriot and American women artists on creative as well as on social and humanitarian issues, the U.S. Embassy's Bicommunal Support Program gave support to local Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot NGOs to sponsor the "Wonder Women Residency Program." During the week of June 20, artists and curators from Cyprus and the U.S. participated in a collective dialogue in Nicosia on their evolving relationship as women artists with their respective communities. Attention focused on how women artists interact with and are portrayed by the media, as well as on the specific plight of women who are trafficked into the commercial sex industry in the U.S., Cyprus, and worldwide. The week's events culminated in the production of art works that were exhibited on June 27 at an opening at the Peace Room on Ledra Street in Old Nicosia, which attracted hundreds of visitors from both sides of the dividing "Green Line."
