Improvisation Expert James Bailey Conducts Theatre Workshops with Local Educators and Artists
September 29 - October 10, 2008
From September 29-October 10, 2008, improvisation and theatre education expert James Thomas Bailey, an experienced, actor, director and producer from Los Angeles, led seventeen workshops reaching hundreds of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot students, educators and actors. His program was co-sponsored by the Cyprus Theatre Organization, a semi-state organization dedicated to theatre arts promotion and education.
During his workshops for teachers, Mr. Bailey showed that theatre is not only for actors. Using techniques derived from improv theatre, he showed teachers from a variety of disciplines, including teachers without any experience on stage, how to elicit greater participation from students and how to unleash their students' creative energies.
Due to the popularity of his programs, Mr. Bailey added two additional improv theatre workshops for professional actors from both communities. Through a series of games and activities, Mr. Bailey worked on stage movement and showed participants how to improve their craft by listening to and cooperating with fellow actors during scenework.
Mr. Bailey also conducted a two-day seminar for a youth theatre troupe at the Municipal Theatre located in the Turkish Cypriot community. Like their more experienced counterparts, the enthusiastic young actors learned techniques that will not only improve their scenework on stage, but taught them how to effectively listen and communicate effectively when off stage as well.
